Humans have been drawn to the stars since, well, ever – and, tbh, it’s not so difficult to see why. Those gleaming dots and vast expanses of emptiness... what exactly is out there? It’s all endlessly fascinating.

All of which is exactly why the annual Milky Way Photographer of the Year contest is so fabulous. Published by travel photography blog Capture the Atlas, it’s aimed at ‘inspiring and sharing the beauty of our galaxy’.

This year’s Milky Way Photographer of the Year competition saw over 3000 entries from photographers from all over the world. It’s the sixth edition of the contest and submissions featured landscapes like deserts, glaciers, mountains and beaches... all lit up by the dazzling Milky Way sky.

You can check out the full list of winners of Milky Way Photographer of the Year 2023 here but, in the meantime, here are a few of our faves from this year’s winners.
