Karma Komedians

TakeOut Comedy Club Saturday 21

If you’re looking for some comic relief to spice up your summer, check out the Karma Komedians, an all-Indian stand-up comedy show featuring Mahesh Mansigani, Smita Venkat, Vivek Mahbubani and Sunil Khiatani performing individual comedy acts.

The four comedians hail from diverse backgrounds and have very different styles. London-born Mansigani describes himself as a high-energy jokester who favours quick banter. Venkat, who came to Hong Kong from Singapore two years ago, is more of a storyteller, sharing tales about her family and work life. “It’s kind of like my therapy,” she laughs. Meanwhile, Hong Kong-born Khiatani is quieter and prefers long story-based jokes that wind up to a punch line. Mahbubani was also born and raised in Hong Kong. A fluent Cantonese speaker, he is perhaps the city’s brightest stand-up talent.

Despite their different backgrounds, all four are enthusiastic about performing in Hong Kong and enjoy the challenge of adapting to a mixed audience of expats and locals. “So long as it comes from an honest place, it usually will strike a chord with your audience, whoever they are,” says Venkat.

What do they want their audience to walk away with? Mansigani grins: “Tears and side-splitting pain from all the laughter!”
