Remembering the Sixties
Arts Centre, McAulay Studio Thursday 8-Saturday 10
Remembering the Sixties is an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza which takes you on a trip down memory lane to pay homage to what writer, director and cast member Michael Sharmon describes as “an amazing decade.” He continues: “So many things happened that really influenced generations to come after that, and in so many ways. There was the Vietnam War, and the assassination of JFK. The music, movies and fashion were also so influential for the decades that followed. So what we’re trying to do is highlight all those events through the use of a musical that draws from the best music of that time.”
Sharmon hopes that the production will do justice to the revolutionary decade for those who remember it, and prompt curiosity in those who don’t (either those people who weren’t born yet, or those that were really there and who therefore have forgotten it all). Indeed, a great deal of research has gone into the writing of the show to chronicle the historical events that took place during this time. And while the production ambitiously attempts to cover the thrilling, groundbreaking and tragic nature of the period, it is the music that ties it all together and makes Remembering the Sixties a truly memorable performance. It’s a tribute. It’s a laugh. It’s a riot-and-a-half.
