What would you do if you mistakenly picked up a briefcase with a million dollars of cash inside? In the Cantonese adaption of English playwright Ray Conney’s Funny Money, presented here by the Hong Kong Federation of Drama Societies, protagonist Mr Dang tells his wife to get ready in a hurry for a one-way trip to Taiwan to enjoy their newfound wealth.
But the arrival of a policeman sends the couple into a spin, with their lies piling up as one unforeseen situation follows another. Director Henry Fong says of his comedy of errors: “[The play] shows the absurdity of humanity in ridiculous, far-fetched situations. It could happen to anyone.” With false identities and slapstick galore, the farce is said to be “good fun all the way through”.
Fong reckons that over-stressed Hongkongers will welcome this kind of comedy, which is fast and furious enough to give the audience no time to dissect or examine the plot. “In Hong Kong, farce is still not common,” says Fong. “It demands split-second timing, quick and witty repartee and broad physical humour. It is hard to deliver. But fortunately we are able to gather those few in Hong Kong who can handle and enjoy their part of the play. For me, to work with them is a pleasure.”
