Sing-a-long

Arts Centre Shouson Theatre, Thursday 2-Sunday 5 & Thursday 9-Sunday 12

Fans of Cantopop, start swooning: Trinity Theatre are bringing back their three-hour sing-athon for a third run, and this time around, they’ve added some actual star power into the mix – with pop singers Charlene Choi and Kary Ng joining in the performance’s first and second weeks, respectively.

“It’s been our theatre group’s aim to document our city, to document our life,” explains director Allen Ma, an avowed pop music fan. “As I love pop songs very much, and I also realise the way they sometimes serve as part of our personal memories, I decided to create a story about them.”

With 30 songs – some performed live, some pre-recorded – on the roster, Sing-a-long tells the decade-spanning story of three close friends, charting generations of our pop music history: from the late 1970s folk songs and TV drama theme songs; the Leslie Cheung and Alan Tam rivalry in the early 1980s; the band sound of the late 80s; the ‘four heavenly kings’ of Cantopop in the 90s; and the likes of Eason Chan and Miriam Yeung in the new millennium.

“The best experience I’ve had about this performance was when the audience hummed the songs – many of which are familiar to us all – along with the performers on stage,” Ma recalls. “With this unconventional musical, I hope my audience will be led to rediscover the high quality pop music from years past.” In Cantonese.
