Review: Emmanuel F
Verdict A value-for-money treatment in an organic spa
In HK town, the number of eco-aware spas that use solely organic products is fewer than the number of stars in our overly-polluted sky. Emmanuel F (Shop 211, Nexxus Building, Central, 2167 8280) isn’t exactly a new venue but it does claim to be HK’s ‘first organic pampering destination’. And I’m intrigued as to what it has to offer.
To the left of the reception area there’s the salon. Emmanuel F does hair colours (from $800) and perming (from $1,500) but there’s none of that pungent ammonia and chemical smell you get from ordinary salons as Emmanuel F uses only organic products.
I’m not here for my hair, so I’m led to the right to the treatment rooms. The flooring and cabinets are made with stylised bamboo and the place is spacious with a five-star atmosphere. All good.
I opt for the 75-minute anti-pollution facial ($900). It begins with a 10-minute back massage. I know – it’s only supposed to be a facial! Afterwards, a round of cleansing and scrubbing is done using Phyt’s organic products which feel deliciously rich on the skin.
My face is then steamed and the blackheads are extracted. It’s a thorough process but I feel the need to ask the therapist to stop after a while. If extraction isn’t your friend (not everyone likes the pricky feeling on their face), you can opt for an eyebrow waxing instead. Next, a gooey mask is applied to soothe the post-extraction agitated face and the treatment ends with a foot massage.
I’m impressed with the overall experience and I reckon pregnant ladies and people undergoing cancer treatment will appreciate it even more. It’s highly efficient and effective. And, although I haven’t tried the salon yet, I feel a visit in that direction should be imminent. Kawai Wong
