Belotta pluma pork

Adding to the ever-growing field of upscale eateries in PMQ, Sohofama is the latest ‘comfort Chinese cuisine’ offering from the team behind Sai Ying Pun’s hip, health-conscious restaurant, Locofama. Their claim to nix MSG from their menu of super-curated, organic, local, fusion and traditional Canto delights (a sparse a-la-carte menu and set menu is all there is, for the moment) as well as an aesthetic partnership with lifestyle chain GOD has made the spot a veritable watering ground for the cool.

On the waiter’s recommendation, we go for the eye-wateringly costly Belotta pluma pork with garlic ($248): eight slices of medium-rare meat that leave our lips puckering due to over-salting. Although the texture of the Iberico pig is soft and yielding, the brothy, garlic, vinegar and coriander only acidify the overbearing salt. Our other two dishes – truffle xiao long bao ($98) and beef with chilli sauce ($148) – are seasoned more proportionally. The latter, although a little oily, serves up thick pieces of satisfyingly tender beef with a spicy kick, and the former is possibly one of the best renditions of the much-tried truffle bao in town. The skin is just thin and elastic enough to hold the fragrant soup, with just enough hint of truffle to balance the silky meat. It’s not exactly comfort food but it sure does look pretty.
