Battle of the bartenders
Hong Kong’s World Class Bartender of the Year gears up for the global final
Sunday June 17 marked a milestone occasion for Hong Kong’s cocktail scene as eight of the city’s best bartenders came together for the Diageo Reserve World Class finals at Lily & Bloom. It was a day of intense challenges as the finalists showed off their creativity and skills in a three-part competition consisting of a written exam, blind tasting and drinks presentation. The final leg was judged by a panel of industry professionals that included World Class 2011 Bartender of the Year Manabu Ohtake from Tokyo, Japan. During this session, each finalist prepared three drinks using Diageo Reserve’s exclusive portfolio of premium spirits.
The event culminated with the announcement party, where Tom Wood of Wyndham the 4th was crowned Hong Kong’s first ever World Class champion, followed by Ricky Liau of Mamoz and second runner-up Roshan Shetty from 8½ Otto e Mezzo. Proving himself worthy of the title, Wood wowed the judges with his multinsensory cocktails, including A Blended Experience – a ritual bottle serve of Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve paired with a Chinese tea blend and dragon’s beard candy. Wood will go on to compete against 50 of the world’s most talented bartenders in the global final in Rio de Janeiro from July 5 to 12.
