Hong Kong’s best... Salads
You can throw together your own healthy salads here or go for one of the ready-made, chef-designed creations. You’ll also be tempted to order one of their summer specials, such as the prosciutto salad (available through July) with spinach, arugula, avocado, toasted pistachios and cherries tossed in blue cheese and apple dressing. There’s also a salmon tartare salad for August, which features mesclun greens, crisp cucumbers, edamame and radish in a lime and ginger-spiked soy dressing. The signature salad is definitely recommended. It’s a heaped bowl filled with baby spinach, apples, bacon, walnuts, red onion and white cheddar cheese for that little touch of indulgence (come on, you deserve it). We also love the Vegetarian Thanksgiving and Cowboy Cool, which both clock in at less than 400 calories. Don’t forget to bring their reusable bowl for two free toppings when you build your own salads. 30-34 Cochrane St, Central, 2850 6818; hk.justsalad.com.
Mana! is an eco-friendly fast ‘slow food store’ nestled between the many noodles shops on Wellington Street. Their mix-and-match salad boxes start from $55 and allow you to choose from a range of locally sourced, fresh and organic ingredients. Also be sure to try their famous ‘flats’ – homebaked flatbreads topped with a special spread called za’atar (a mixture of thyme, sumac sesame and sea salt) and good-for-you ingredients such as roasted veggies and hummus. They’re simply delightful. 92 Wellington St, Central, 2851 1611; www.mana.hk.
Simplylife’s multiple outlets all offer steady rotations of prepared salads brimming with unfussy ingredients and clean flavours. Offerings such as beets with orange, Greek salad and chickpeas with lentils are perfect for a quick lunch. The veggies are fresh and their dressings are drizzled generously. You can eat in but if you don’t want to be tempted by the counter of flaky, buttery pastries, it’s best to order your salads to-go. The Lounge at JW Marriott is known for providing one of the best salad bars in town. The restaurant has divided its lunch buffets into different sections and all the health nuts out there can go for unlimited dibs at the salad corner for $155 per person. It’s plenty of food but if you still want full access to the entire lunch buffet, it’s $270 per person. L/F, JW Marriott, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, 2810 8366.
