Food of the fortnight: Sir Kensington's Ketchup
It’s not every day that we’d be excited to dole out $75 for a jar of condiments. Then again, Sir Kensington’s Gourmet Ketchup isn’t your average additive-laden pap. It’s proper, tomato-spun goodness sealed in a heavy glass pot. The proud creation of the fictional, Oxbridge-educated, eccentric British gentleman Sir Kensington, this supreme sauce carries a thick, scoopable body that’s studded with ample bits of real fruit pulp.
It’s truly artisanal stuff, crafted from vine-ripened pear tomatoes and a rainbow of spices. And while most other commercial ketchups are made with, ugh, high fructose corn syrup, Sir Kensington only sweetens with natural agave nectar, honey and a touch of raw brown sugar.
The resulting product has much more life to it than your traditional French fry accompaniment. It’s equal parts of sweet and salty with a hint of spice and lime-fuelled tang to give it that extra flavour dimension. We’ve slopped it on sandwiches, we’ve had it with eggs and we’d venture to say that this gourmet ketchup would do quite nicely over pasta with a little bit of cracked black pepper and fresh basil. Really, it’s that good.
Sir Kensington’s ketchup is available in two flavours: classic and spiced (with an extra punch of chipotle peppers). Both are available at Great Food Hall. Dorothy So
