Hong Kong’s best... Tapas joints
FoFo by el Willy
Consultant chef Guillermo “el Willy” Trullas Moreno has designed a fun tapas menu that combines traditional dishes with quirky new ones. Scallops ceviche with avocado and crispy shallots, and grilled razor clams with garlic and parsley are both easy favourites. Finish the meal with an order of churros served with vanilla ice cream and warm chocolate sauce. 20/F, M88, 2-8 Wellington St, Central, 2900 2009; www.fofo.hk. $500.
Uno Màs
Most of the ingredients used here are imported from Spain to ensure that the flavours remain as authentic as possible. Crispy croquettes stuffed with Ibérico bellota ham, rice cooked in squid ink and grilled sardines in salsa verde are just some of the tantalising tapas they have on offer. Drop by for lunch if you want to try the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat tapas menu, which includes signatures such as shortbread with olive tapenade and anchovies, and chorizo sausages in red wine reduction. 1/F, The Broadway, 54-62 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai, 2527 9111; www.uno-mas.com. $750.
Hyde
Hyde may be known more as a nightlife destination but the club actually offers a fantastic menu for lunch, afternoon tea and late night snacking. The tapas are especially delicious. Try Provençal mussels doused in spicy tomato cream sauce and served with crusty toast, or the homemade fusion loaf stuffed with mushrooms, bell peppers and feta cheese. Lunch and brunchtime diners also get to enjoy free access to the pool tables. 2/F & 3/F, Lyndhurst Tower, 1 Lyndhurst Tce, Central, 2850 6283; www.hyde.hk. $400.
Ole
Ole is a firm favourite with the traditionalists. The dining room oozes romantic charm with beautifully sculpted archways and ornamental vases that rest against the walls. The food also stays close to the classics. Start with sharing plates of freshly sliced Spanish ham and work your way through the tapas menu. The stuffed baby squid served in black ink gravy is a definite must-try. 1/F, Shun Ho Tower, 24-30 Ice House St, Central, 2523 8624. $800.
Tapeo
This 24-seater serves up a bona fide tapas and wine bar experience. Diners sit around an open kitchen as chefs prepare plates of garlic prawns and Spanish egg tortillas. The crispy pork belly with quince alioli is another highlight. Tapeo has a larger venue in Sai Wan Ho but food at the Central branch is generally better. G/F, Au’s Bldg, 15-19 Hollywood Rd, 3171 1989. $400.
Viva Ana
Diners are greeted by a large leg of Spanish ham as soon as they step through the door – have the chef slice up a small plate for your table. Other Spanish specialties worth trying include garlic-rubbed toasted bread with fresh tomato and clams in green sauce. Order a jug of sangria (the peach flavoured sangria is particularly apt for summer) to go with the feast. Shop 1, G/F, The Garden East, 222 Queen’s Rd East, Wan Chai, 2832 6660. $400.
