Any excuse for a drink: Skyscraper Day, September 3

Posted:

Tired of the low points of Hong Kong nightlife? Celebrate the high life on September 3, also known as Skyscraper Day. This holiday commemorates all those concrete juggernauts that put a crick in our neck and an antenna smack-dab in the middle of our would-be harbour views.

Skyscraper Day is September 3 because it’s the birthday of the father of modern skyscrapers, Louis H. Sullivan. Thanks to him, the Hong Kong skyline has evolved from tiny to towering (for better or worse). Since Hong Kong has the greatest number of skyscrapers in the world (more than 3,000 buildings over 90 metres, with a whopping 43 over 200 metres), it’s the place to be to celebrate this day.

Plenty of savvy Hong Kong businesses have converted their winning views into mountains of cash. While the obvious bars – Aqua Spirit, Azure, Sevva – come to mind for this holiday, we encourage you to have your tipple at the top of Wan Chai. Check out Gossip 51, a karaoke bar on the 51st floor of the China Online Centre. Sure, the seats are a little worn and there’s always a chance a drunken Chinese guy may serenade you with the latest Eason Chan hit, but the unbroken views of Victoria Harbour are hard to beat. Toast Mr Sullivan with a Manhattan, a nod to the second tallest city in the world. Welcome back to the top.

When: September 3.
Where: Gossip 51, 51/F, 333 Lockhart Rd, 2887 3538.
Drink: Manhattan ($60).
