Any excuse for a drink: Tony Bennett's Birthday, August 3

Posted:

Tony Bennett, the crooner who told us to “drink up all of you people” in his song Angel Eyes, is turning 84 years old on August 3. Born Anthony Benedetto in Queens, New York, the son of an Italian immigrant, Tony grew up listening to musical legends Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong. During World War II, Tony entertained fellow troops as part of the 314th Army Special Services Band. He went to school on the GI Bill after the war, studying bel canto singing. His big break came when he was discovered by Bob Hope, who hired Tony to go on the road with him (and suggested his now-famous stage name, Tony Bennett). Hits like Because of You and Blue Velvet ensured Tony a faithful fan base, complete with doting females who dressed in black to “mourn” in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York when the songster got hitched.

In his 84 years, Tony’s seen war, drug addiction, concerts at Carnegie Hall, Grammys, a collab with Flava Flav, and everything in between. So on the big man’s birthday, make sure you’re Steppin’ Out to raise a glass to the timeless singer. Head to the intimate Peel Fresco, where the live jazz on stage and sumptuous paintings on the walls resonate perfectly with Tony’s other love, art. (He actually paints and sells several pieces under the name Benedetto.) Celebrate his Italian heritage by getting a classic Amaretto Sour. And if they try to cut you off, just tell everyone, “They can’t take that away from me.”

When: August 3.
Where: Peel Fresco, 49 Peel St, Central, 2540 2046.
Drink: Amaretto Sour ($68).
