Bar Hop: Discovery Bay
Mark Tjhung chooses cocktails over golf carts in Lantau’s breezy, green community
1. Hemingways
This Caribbean-themed bar is the King of DB al fresco, sporting the loungiest outdoor couches, sun-protecting marquees, and views of Tai Pak Bay Beach. Bands provide regular rocking entertainment, and if you want to get on the booze (which, in a place named after Ernest himself, is a must) then indulge in their incomparable selection of rum. 2. McSorleys
Just like its Soho sister, this Irish drinking den trades in a solid pub atmosphere, live sports and Guinness by the pint-load, particularly on ‘Black Wednesday’ when the stout goes at Happy Hour prices all day. Take up a seat on the front patio and watch the community go about its business. G11A-1, 2987 8280, www.mcsorleysdb.com.hk.
3. Caramba
DB wouldn’t feel complete without a Mexican-themed restobar. The water-fronting exterior is swamped with simple cane chairs and tables, while the interior is designed like a traditional, warm cantina. As you’d expect, tequila is the spirit of choice, with more than 20 varieties on the menu to help get the fiesta started. G08A, 2987 2848, www.caramba.com.hk.
4. Café Duvet
Palms, shady day beds, and tapas: Café Duvet is a touch of the Mediterranean. Adjoining the plaza is a simple bar churning out drinks and R&B hits, but the courtyard is where the lounging is at. Settle into one of the bungalows with a cocktail or a house-infused vodka, and relax the day or night away at Duvet. G06, 2987 0966, www.igors.com.
5. The Plaza
The plaza is as much a drinking institution as anywhere in Discovery Bay, with sturdy wooden benches dotted around the wide, circular space. Grab some drinks from Fusion, and watch the cans pile up.
Food
Just about all the bars here double as hearty eateries, but sometimes only the obvious will do. In that case turn to Ebeneezer’s, where a kebab or pizza should be able to meet your gastronomic needs. G03A, D Deck, 2987 0036.
