Bar Hop: Sheung Wan
Andrew James finds the bar scene slowly spreading west to the city’s new place to be
This relaxed spot picks up during the week with its regular crew of happy hour revelers often spilling out front onto the patio. If you're in need of a feeding, this is the spot to do it in a slightly more relaxed atmosphere. 79 Bonham Strand East, 2827 8277.
Low-lit and local, this cozy spot provides a decent selection of beer on tap and a menu of curry and Thai. A substantial crowd drops in after work and has a friendly vibe among the crowd almost every night. 65 Wing Lok St, 2545 2588.
This quiet, shiny, fluro ninth floor bar – just nine floors down from the Elite Model Management office – used to host regular drum’n’bass and gig nights. There's seating on a platform at the back where one can fully recline and take in the soap operas playing on the flat screens suspended from above and listen to the Michael Jackson soundtrack. 9/F, The Pemberton, 22-26 Bonham Strand, 3622 2710.
With half-priced drinks on Wednesdays for those in sexy tank tops, this sleek, dark and seductive bar is clearly one for the boys. Other great promotions in this relaxed environment include Tuesday's champagne night and Jazz at Zoo with all night happy hour on Sunday and Monday. Don't miss their great selection of cocktails and other "zignature" drinks. 33 Jervois St, 3583 1200.
The Sheung Wan chapter of this mini-chain boasts live music almost every night, which – along with happy hour deals, a decent back patio and cigars on sale – makes this a great start to any bar hop. A specially priced cocktail of the month, as well as a decent selection of liquors, cocktails and beers are always on offer. 255 Queen’s Rd Central, 2815 1558.
Sheung Wan has numerous options for food, but we suggest you go for any one of the noodle shops on Mercer or Hillier Street, or make the walk to the corner of Jervois St and Morrison for cheap take out dumplings.
