Bar Hop: Star Street, Wan Chai
Rex Gregg explores the stellar attractions of this chilled enclave on the cusp of Wan Chai and Admiralty
1/5 Nuevo
This is the post-work hangout for the cubicle dwellers across the street at Pacific Place Three, so expect a lot of suits unwinding and mingling with drinks in hand. With a bar upfront and lounge out back, it’s a sweet spot to enjoy happy hour or the monthly specials amid relaxed beats. There’s a wide range of specialty cocktails, but spring for the sangria or mojito and leave work behind. 9 Star St, 2529 2300.
Classified Mozzarella Bar
With its two communal tables and doors opening onto the street, Classified is a great corner hangout, tailor made for people-watching and striking up a conversation over a glass a wine from the extensive, predominantly Italian wine-by-the-glass list. Oh, and don’t forget to try the cheese. 31 Wing Fung St, 2528 3454.
Slim’s
Slim in no way refers to the selection of beers at Slim’s. With a list covering a large number of microbrews and imports, this pub draws a neighborhood crowd looking for a laidback vibe. With sports on the tube, free peanuts to throw on the floor, and great blues blasting, the narrow space is always inviting. Happy hour kicks off at 2.30pm and don’t miss the $10 mini-burgers all day Saturday. 1 Wing Fung St, 2528 1661.
Tapas Bar
No longer serving tapas, this place might as well just call itself Bar, as it’s fairly generic. The small space has a few tables out front and a few scattered inside. The drinks list is heavy on sake and whisky, and they offer a few cigar choices as well. With mellow R&B and pop tunes on shuffle, Tapas Bar is a good place for a quiet conversation. 10 St Francis Yard, 2866 4466.
Food
Pizza, sandwiches and Chinese are all in the vicinity, but if you’re in the mood for something different, wash down the booze with yogurt from Yo Mama, 16 Wing Fung St, 2865 5600.
