9th Macau Food Festival
All the world’s cooking traditions co-mingle in Sai Van Lake Square, as open air food stalls fill the streets and live music fills the air. Games and kiddie rides complement the nibbles. Sai Van Lake Square, Macau, Nov 13-29.

Hong Kong Food and Wine Year
Our city formally livens up its image with events centred on food- and wine-themed gatherings in Lan Kwai Fong, Soho, Sai Kung, and West Kowloon. The merriment begins on October 30 with a three-day wine festival at Cyberport. www.discoverhongkong.com.

IFC bars with views
For bars with balconies, views, and a touch of class, head straight to the rooftop of IFC in Central and drop into Red (Shop 3082, 4012-18, IFC, 8129 8882), G Bar (Shop 4009, IFC, 2234 7739), Isobar (Upstairs at Isola, Shop 3071-75, 4011, IFC, 2383 8765), The Box (Shop 4010, IFC, 2234 7738).

8th Estate Winery
The grapes at Hong Kong’s only winery are imported, but they’re processed and aged in Ap Lei Chau. Tour the premises and taste their tipples while lounging on the massive outdoor terrace. Room 306, 3/F, Harbour Industrial Centre, 10 Lee Hing St, Ap Lei Chau, 2518 0922. Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat 2pm-5pm.

Tapas Tour
It’s like the Time Out Wine Walk but with tapas instead of wine, to celebrate Spanish October. Passports $380 at participating restaurants and Spanish Chamber of Commerce, 7F, Unit B-C, One Capital Place, 18 Luard Rd, Wan Chai, 2763 6236.  www.spanish-chamber.com.hk.

Outdoor drinking
Autumn provides perfect outdoor drinking weather. Take in the stunning panoramic vistas at the new rooftops of Wooloomooloo Wan Chai (31/F and rooftop, 256 Hennessy Rd, Wan Chai, 2893 6960; see our review) and ToTTs (Excelsior Hotel, 34/F, 281 Gloucester Rd, Causeway Bay, 2894 8888), or chill out at our favourite outdoor deck in TST, Where (4/F Century House, 3-4 Hanoi Rd, 2135 9999).

Cool dining:

Duetto
An Indian and Italian kitchen with an outdoor deck that rivals any in the area. Unobstructed views of the harbour and city. 2/F Sun Hung Kai Centre, 30 Harbour Rd, Wan Chai, 2598 1222.

Thai Mary
Its hidden spot by a golf range, an outdoor ‘beer garden’ atmosphere, and excellent BBQ sticks keep us coming back to this little cookery. G/F, City Golf Club, 8 Wui Cheung Rd, Jordan, 2199 7392.

SML
This newcomer sits on prime real estate on top of Times Square. Oversized school chairs and low tables lend it a school-like feel. 11/F, Times Square, 1 Matheson St, Causeway Bay, 2577 3444.
See our review of SML

Han Lok Yuen Pigeon Restaurant
People from all over the world make a pilgrimage to this hilltop restaurant for their roast pigeon, and the fantastic view over the tranquil Lamma bay. Cheap too! 16-17 Hung Shing Yeh, Lamma Island, 2982 0608.

Jaspa’s Beach Club
A 20-minute hike brings you to this old Chinese restaurant that has been converted to include all the signatures of the Jaspa’s brand. Expect pizzas, steaks, and salads – but make sure you call ahead. By appointment only. Pak A Village, Sai Kung, 2792 4733.

  • We (6 people) arrived @12:30pm for our booking on Mar 23, 2011. We're starving in the G Bar waiting for more than 60 mins of our ordered food including oysters, soup, salad, and main courses. G Bar is supposed to be one of the top restaurant & the poor service proof that it is not worth the money we spent (~HKD 4,500). To make it even worst, we saw people smoking in the restaurant and complained to the manager but he didn't take any action. And the food quality is not worth the $$ we pay for. It is certainly one of the longest lunch hour (~2 hours) and worst experience I've ever had.
