Forget New York, New Jersey is making its way to Hong Kong in the form of a family Italian-American eatery. Members of the Wagyu family left to start this restaurant aimed at preserving old-world values and socially responsible dining. Two things we’re looking forward to: house-made breads by artisanal bakers and Brooklyn pizza by the slice. They are also rejecting the 10 per cent service charge. “This takes the incentive or tip away from the waiter and puts it into the pockets of the owners, deteriorating the overall dining experience while giving the distorted appearance these restaurants are 10 per cent cheaper,” says owner Todd Darling. The gentlemen behind Isola, Gaia, and Joia have convinced the Swire Group to give them the space formerly occupied by Elite Concept’s La Fourchette. It will offer stylish Italian cuisine for the biz-lunch crowd and evening movie-goers. Basement, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty, no phone yet.
Jamie’s Italian
2010? Looking ahead, we’re excited to hear Jamie Oliver might be joining the ranks of other celeb chefs in Hong Kong. But is it actually going to happen? Five restaurants are expected to open here next year. But according to Tranic Franchising, they have yet to secure one location. Is this a matter of cart before the horse? We’ll see in the months to come.
