Whether it's breakfast, lunch or afternoon tea, these spots offer a little bite of heaven, at prices that don't cost the Earth.
Baked salmon avocado pasta in cream sauce at Bread Tree
We’ll admit it – we’re completely biased at Time Out towers about this dish. Since our launch, there hasn’t been a week that goes by without somebody in the office ordering Bread Tree’s salmon avocado pasta (better known as ‘LX4’ on the extensive menu, $34 incl choice of drink). This comforting pile of slow releasing carbs is just what hardworking editors and designers need to keep them going during the busy production week. Shop 9, G/F, 130-146 Jaffe Rd, Wan Chai, 2529 8849.
Baby spinach, walnut and blue cheese salad at Graze
Who says you can’t get a decent meal in Sheung Wan? At Graze, you’re chowing down on berry brainy smoothies ($36/large), earl grey and honey muffins ($14), and healthy salads, such as the baby spinach, toasted walnut and blue cheese ($42). G/F Chao’s Bldg, 143-145 Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, 2850 7766.
Le Poulet et Carotte at Robuchon Salon de The
Only $43 buys you one of Hong Kong’s best sandwiches. Robuchon’s reasonably priced outpost has people lining up for their farmer style baguettes and flaky croissants, but we go straight for the Le Poulet et Carotte sandwich ($43). It’s a divine combination of chicken slices flavoured with mild curry, julienne carrots and a tangy mayo sauce, all contained in a freshly baked, crunchy baguette. Shop 401, 3/F The Landmark, Central, 2166 9000.
Breakfast set at Australian Dairy Company
Anyone can cook eggs, but no one does it better than the Australian Dairy Company. The breakfast set ($30) consists of fluffy and moist scrambled eggs served with rich buttery thick toast, and comes with a plate of macaroni along with char siu in chicken broth. This meal is breakfast for many Hongkongers, but here is served around the clock – the portions are big enough to satisfy the hungriest of dinner pangs. 47-49 Parkes St, Jordan, 2730 1356.
Herbal soup at Chinese Soup Café
The Soup Café is IFC’s answer to a canteen. And since Canteen has closed and been replaced by Simply Life, cheap eats have been slim pickings in the mega complex. With prices that start from $58, you receive a large army canteen of the Chinese herbal soup of the day, accompanied by a main, usually a ramen noodle soup. Shop 12B, Lower Level, Airport Express, Central, 2915 2261.
Afternoon tea set at Zuma
During lunchtime, this shiny and stylised modern Japanese restaurant is almost exclusively populated by bankers, but arrive during afternoon trading hours and you can enjoy a great tea set with cake, macaroons and other pastry goodies, plus a cup of coffee – all for just $90. A great recharge station for when you’ve splurged on a Central shopping spree. 5/F & 6/F The Landmark, Central, 3657 6388.
Butter fried chicken wings at Ying Ping Vietnamese Restaurant
Enfant terrible Edison Chen is a big fan of Ying Ping’s butter fried chicken wings ($30/4 pieces). If you’re not a celebrity, however, then you’ll have to join the crowds who wait up to an hour just to get their hands on these deep fried goodies. The juicy meat and the crumbly skin make them a perfect guilty pleasure snack. 2/F Cigna Tower, 482 Jaffe Rd, Causeway Bay, 2832 9038.
Crispy bun with peanut butter and condensed milk at Mian Café
With dozen of outlets all over the territory, this little café is perfect for a quick munch between meals. Their specialty is crispy bun with peanut butter and condensed milk ($8 each), which taste a whole lot better than they sound – trust us. Shop116, 1/F New Town Plaza Phase 1, Sha Tin Centre St, Sha Tin, 2688 5282.
Set lunch at Bowls Cafe
Over the years, Ocean park staffers have been frequenting this cheerful cafe with good reason. Only $37 buys a three-course lunch consisting of a creamy asparagus soup, garlic bread, deep fried filet of sole with pasta, and a cup of freshly brewed coffee. All this with the dignified presentation of a proper restaurant, not a fast food outlet – did we mention the service is superb? Eat your heart out Cafe de Coral. G/F, 117 Ap Lei Chau Main St, Ap Lei Chau, 2870 0111.
