Salon de Ning
We laughed when we walked room to room from Madame Ning’s 1930’s Shanghai boudoir into the 1960’s Swiss ski lodge (complete with fireplace) to the Middle Eastern themed hunter’s quarter in this grownup Disneyland. The themes are extended to their signature drinks, which include the Ning Sling, a pinkish fruity cocktail designed for socialites. They even have their own brand of Champagne, which makes us like this place all the more. B/F, The Peninsula, Salisbury Rd, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, 2920 2888.
Runner-up: SEVVA
Probably the most prime location for a rooftop bar in town, Sevva’s got a 360-degree view of Hong Kong from the pinnacle of Central. What’s more, it’s got comfy loungers that invite party people to linger around while watching the sun dip in the west. The service has improved since when it first opened last spring, but do anticipate extra waiting time as the staff to customer ratio here is around 1:30 here. 25/F, Prince’s Bldg, Central, 2537 1388.
Second runner-up: Solas Bar & Lounge
Wyndham Street’s Solas has proven to be a favourite meeting point before the night really kicks off. The music played (mainly house) isn’t annoying and it’s a (relatively) respectable pick-up joint for singles. Every so often, Solas hosts parties ranging from networking events to fashion shows, but they’re generally open to public, which makes this place an even more happening spot for the young-ish and cool. G/F, The Centrium. 60 Wyndham St, Central, 3162 3710.
Honorable mention: Lei Dou
The sexy factor here is dripping. This place just says ‘make out with me’ (but thankfully the results aren’t evident on the fabric). The mood is upscale sinister, which is why it is a favourite among the playgirls and boys of Hong Kong. G/F, 20-22 D'Aguilar St, Central, 2525 6628.
Reader’s Choice: MO Bar
This bar doesn’t just host parties… it hosts legendary parties. John Legend, Alicia Keyes, Wyclef Jean and a slew of other celebs have rolled through to play exclusive, intimate concerts at MO Bar, making this our upscale CBGBs of sorts. 15 Queen's Road Central, The Landmark, Central, 2132 0077.
