Alasdair Nicol surfs the net to find Hong Kong’s best buys
When the tax cut on wine was announced in February of this year I predicted home drinking and online wine sales to soar. So, in my quest to decipher and translate the best places to find and buy wine, I decided to go shopping online for wine. Laptop and credit card in hand I scoured the web to find local suppliers of our favourite plonk that can be ordered, paid for and delivered to your door, without you even having to leave your seat.
First and foremost I headed to Asia Expat and found that they have a list of 20 available wine merchants, of which seven offered online ordering and delivery. My favourite three are CellarMasters Wine Club, Vinoteca HK and Wineshop Hong Kong. All websites offer a fine range of both New and Old World wines from varying regions, alongside great insights into the wine world and good informative local information.
Moving on, I surfed over to the Adelaide Cellar Door, a fairly new but well known site for great deals on Australian and New Zealand wines. They offer discounted mixed cases of some great value wines and can have them delivered to your door within two working days.
Going up-scale I browsed the Berry Bros & Rudd website, the home of some of the finest wines in London. They offer very fine wines to buy online and you can even choose from 3,000 wines currently cellared in London warehouses. Delivery from London requires only a small fee of $180 per case for safe, secure and refrigerated shipping.
Emerging soon will be an online wine site called Chic Vines. This site, my sources inform me, will offer great Margaret River wines, stunning Burgundies, small chateau French wines and some excellent Washington State wines from the US.
My advice, look out for and subscribe to the newsletters the sites offer. They will, in turn, update you on their latest and greatest deals and inform you of new wines available to the home drinker. Take the hassle and expense out of drinking fine wines – just order a few cases online and your home will become a much more exciting place to hang out.
