Simian Mobile Disco is the British DJ-production duo that arose from the ashes of Simian, the shambolic indie-rock combo that went belly-up in 2004. Simian, in turn, is best known as the band behind Never Be Alone, the track that Justice remixed into We Are Your Friends, the supernaturally catchy electro-rock monster that’s one of this millennium’s biggest clubland hits. But those looking for either buzz saw synth lines or ultra hooky singalongs won’t find them on this latest dispatch from London club Fabric. What they will discover, though, is one of the most adventurous, well thought-out mix-CDs to come out this year. Like any great set, the tracks are the main thing, and James Ford and Jas Shaw have cast a wide net in search of their selections. The Serge Santiago mix of Hercules and Love Affair’s Blind, an industrial-strength version of the synth-disco original, might not be so unexpected – but tossing the 1991 marimba and glockenspiel workout Suite Equestria from NYC eccentric Mooned into the exact middle of the CD (a slot often reserved for a mix’s big hit) certainly qualifies as daring. Ford and Shaw have concocted plenty of creative transitions between the tracks: after Perc & Spectral’s beat-free Up Tool spirals skyward in a squall of sound, for instance, the familiar neo disco throb of Metro Area’s Miura gently brings things back to a pillowy landing. Sure, it’s not exactly rocket science, but it’s touches like those that let this mix soar.
