It’s like Live Earth, but with edgier acts and minus the charitable instinct – unless, that is, your idea of charity is giving people an excuse to have a massive party. (For the record, we’re all for that.)
Jeans brand Diesel is turning 30 and they’ve called in – no, hang on, shelled out for – a whole lot of music friends to help them celebrate simultaneously in 17 cities around the world on Saturday 11. The first question that immediately springs to mind is: where the hell is Hong Kong? Clearly not on Diesel’s map. Sigh.
If you want to get a slice of the action, however, here’s your chance to jump on a plane to Beijing, Tokyo, or Dubai – the nearest cities to us hosting the shows. Tokyo in particular has a yummy line-up featuring LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy with DFA’s Pat Mahoney, 2manydjs, A-Trak, Ed Banger’s Mr. Oizo, Ken Ishii, and Soulwax, all playing at Makuhari Messe. In Beijing, meanwhile, Steve Aoki – DJ, producer, and founder of Dim Mak has put together a smashing line-up in celebration of Diesel’s big birthday. Ed Banger’s Uffie and Dim Mak artists The Bloody Beetroots and Them Jeans will be among the acts raising the roof in the 798 art district.
“We’re all really tight and I love everyone that I’m playing with, and the energy is really going to come out,” says Aoki over the phone from Los Angeles. “It’s going to be a really exciting show, good music, new music.”
Aside from the man himself, Aoki hypes up the Bloody Beetroots as the act to keep an eye on. “To me the music that Bloody Beetroots produces is the music of the future. They’re really writing cutting edge dance music that is creating a new direction for electronic music. They’re amazing DJs, Uffie’s an amazing singer, and Them Jeans is an amazing DJ. Everyone is amazing. It’s going to be a special night.”
Outside of Beijing – in case you happen to be wandering around the world at the time – you might also be able the attend the parties in New York, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Athens, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Milan, Munich, Paris, Oslo, London, Stockholm, Zurich, and Sao Paolo. Now’s a good time to enlarge your carbon footprint – but if you’re green-minded, or simply skint, you can also beam it in from the internets: all the shows will be broadcast live on www.diesel.com.
