The new Yau Ma Tei Theatre
Not that long ago, things were looking rather bleak for Cantonese Opera, and one of the central issues was venues. But in the last couple of months, things have really turned around. Much of the talk has been about the iconic Sunbeam Theatre, once penciled in for closure, being saved at the last minute. Or the response to the West Kowloon Bamboo Theatre over CNY. But all the while, a little gem has been forming in Yau Ma Tei.
This is the new Yau Ma Tei theatre, Hong Kong’s newest xiqu venue. Not so long ago a porn theatre, the theatre has undergone a significant renovation project, turning the Art Deco building into a sleek, modern and intimate 300-seat auditorium designed for Cantonese opera.
It's expected to open officially in mid-July, but prior to opening, there will be there three concerts of Cantonese Opera excerpts on April 28, May 20 and May 26. Tickets are available at www.lcsd.gov.hk/ab.
