Javier Perianes
Javier Perianes plays the piano with a sort of restrained passion that emotes perfectly with the classical romantic works that he is often drawn towards. Described as a ‘poet’ with the piano, Perianes plays with an intimate delicateness that replaces vigorous raw virtuosity – without losing any clarity of expression.
Since establishing himself as a star in his Spanish homeland, Perianes has gone about building his international recognition. He’s taken to distinguished concert platforms across the world, including at New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Shanghai Conservatory – and, on top of that, he has worked with a number of renowned conductors such as Lorin Maazel, Daniel Barenboim and Antoni Wit. Most recently, Perianes appeared with the Israel Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta, to high acclaim.
While he’s worked with a long list of star conductors, Perianes is equally adept at performing on his lonesome. Indeed his return to Hong Kong as part of the Premiere Performances Recital Series this fortnight will see him flying solo. The first half of his recital programme is devoted to the beautiful melodies of Debussy and Chopin, including the perennial favourite Clair de Lune. The latter half of the programme gives Perianes a chance to get closer to his Spanish roots, dedicated entirely to Manuel de Falla. With lyrical pieces such as Falla’s Nocturne, the line-up is tailor-made to Perianes’ elegant, sensitive touch – perfect for those who want to be swept away by the romantic airs of Chopin, Debussy and Falla.
