The Damned's Captain Sensible

Posted:

Read more about The Damned's gig in Hong Kong here.

Captain Sensible is a singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, alternative punk-rocker, man of rebellion and all-round nice guy. With his trademark red beret, shades and crazy looks, he is the face of gothic punk band, The Damned, who grace Hong Kong at the end of the month. Along with singer Dave Vanian, Monty Oxy Moron, Pinch and Stu West, they're visiting HK as part of their lengthy 35th anniversary tour. And Cap'n Sensible reckons fans will see a top set from a band who are still 'on fire'.

This is your first time in Hong Kong. What brings you here?
We are spreading our own brand of joy and happiness around the world... and I see it as part of our job to fight against the 'plastic' music that is everywhere these days unfortunately.

Do you have many fans here in Hong Kong?
There are discerning music lovers everywhere.

Have any of you actually been to HK before? All excited?
My wife has been to HK before and has been raving about the old trams and wonderful food. I can't wait.

What sort of show are we to expect here?
We will be showcasing the same mix of the punky first album and the dark gothic Black Album. Mix in a few 'audience favourites' and you've got a really nice setlist. The band is on fire at the moment. There's still a lot of passion in this band - and Mr Vanian is singing better than ever.

Your popularity has remained strong over the years. What's your secret?
We are a real band. We don't use tapes, choreographed routines or play the songs the same every night. I think the UK fans that have supported us wonderfully over the years might say they enjoy the spontaneity of the gigs. I certainly do.

What is it about The Damned which still captures the imagination?
It's punk, yes... but with a nice, riffy guitar feel and a few spoonfuls of psychedelia for good measure. We don't do 'one dimensional'.

Any new albums/tracks in the pipeline?
Do you work for a record label? If so the answer is yes - where do we sign?

What does the future hold for The Damned?
It's a blast to be playing these 35th anniversary gigs. We are playing better than ever and having fun. Where does The Damned pirate ship head next? Nobody knows…
