Time Out Podcast: Episode 39

Posted:

We feature Taiwanese noise pop, Beijing mad punk, Twin Peaks-inspired lo-fi rock, and pay our respects to a lost friend this fortnight. Email mark.tjhung@timeout.com.hk to get your tracks featured on an upcoming pod. Presented by Sean Hocking of Metal Postcard Records.

Bone Table Taxi to Wan Chai

A much-loved member of the music community, Maggie Chang, recently passed away, so the pod is paying tribute by featuring one of her former bands. This track, recorded for the Underground Compilation 2, is powered by Chang’s energetic, pulsating bass. See above, as
Hong Kong musos remember Da Countess.

Subs Queen of Fucking Everything

More wild chick-fronted punk comes our way with this Beijing foursome. This is the title track from their most recent album, released last year. Catch them at Hidden Agenda on Sun Apr 3.

The White Eyes No No No

We met a friendly record buying visitor in Taipei recently, who hit up the wonderfully named White Wabbit Record store to search out local tunes. He came up with the goods, digging up a copy The White Eyes debut EP, which, in our humble opinion, is up there with the early works of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Laura Palmer Unplug Me Before I Died

Shyly handed over to one half of the Pairs at the recent Half Baked gig at Saffron on the Peak, this CDR has made it into my greasy little palms and a promising little group they seem to be. Noisy unformed rockers with a great band name – a good start.

Fleet Foxes Helplessness Blues

This is for those of you who fell in love with Seattle’s Fleet Foxes a few years back on release of their debut album. With number two on its way soon, here’s a taster via a recent promo MP3.
