Time Out Podcast: Episode 21

Posted:

With bluegrass, d’n’b, Cambodian psychedelia and Mongolian folk, this is one of our most diverse pods ever. We could do with some Celtic electro-metal or Vietnamese water music, so, if you’ve got any, or any other demos that you want to get onto the pod, go to drop.io/timeouthk, pop them there and you could be on next edition. Presented by Sean Hocking from Metal Postcard Records.

Bluegrass? From Beijing? It might seem unlikely, but this capital-based group of American expats bring it to the Fringe Club on July 10, rounding off their China-wide launch tour of their debut album All That Glitters. Here’s the title track.

Sushi Robot Looking into the Face of Danger

Violent Jokes members Simon Griffin and Claudio Canzonetta put on their Sushi Robot hats, creating a sample- and manipulation-heavy mix of moody drum’n’bass, electro and breaks. They’ll play Rockschool on July 17, alongside Dane Prins Nitram. We hear an album is also
on the horizon, and this track will be on there.

Altan Urag Khukh Tolboton / Blue Mark

From the steppes of Mongolia come the wonderful Altan Urag who’ve updated the traditional rhythms of Mongolian folk music and incorporated throat singing into the rock song format. They recently attended Music Matters to play to music industry bods and in July they are off to Japan for a mini tour.

CSP were in town a few months ago, and Metal Postcard Records loved them so much, they’re releasing their debut single on a glorious 7”. The single will be the first by a Cambodian act since the Khmer Rouge came to power. The band are doing a mini tour in France in August and fixing up some London dates as well.

Blk Jks Zol!

With a certain sporting event coming to a climax in South Africa this fortnight, we thought we better feature the SA band of the moment, Blk Jks. They’ve actually been around for a decade now and have been compared to the likes of TV on The Radio and, to us, bear a passing resemblance to Living Colour. Psych township rock would be our best description.
