Time Out Podcast: Episode 17
We had a look in the top drawer this fortnight, found all these tracks lying around, and decided to put them to good use. Psychedelic pop, experimental electronica, and some cross-cultural mash ups feature here. If you’re keen to see your track on this downloadable showcase of emerging Hong Kong, regional and international music, head to drop.io/timeouthk and leave your music there.

Dengue Fever March of the Balloon Animals
www.myspace.com/denguefevermusic
Take 1960s Cambodian pop music, add a few pinches of psychedelic rock and simmer on high, and you have Dengue Fever’s unique blend of sound. Experience it when they play Grappa’s Cellar on May 15. This track is from their soundtrack Sleepwalking Through the Mekong.
Joey Chu + AbztraQt Sir Q Honqon
www.myspace.com/projectothree
Even on T(h)ree, a superb collaboration of artists from Portugal, Hong Kong and Macau, this track from Joey Chu and Lisbon’s AbztraQt Sir Q is one of the standouts – a quirky, mysterious and wonderfully disjointed clash of styles. T(h)ree hosts the biggest of its launch parties at Space on May 15.
5 MinS Baby Milk City
www.douban.com/artist/fivemins
Shanghai-based act 5 MinS test the boundaries of self-censorship by writing a song that (not very) obliquely refers to last year’s Sanlu milk powder crisis. This is actually a great piece of leftfield pop electronica.

In our 5 in 8 mix series we bring you Alok Leung of Lona Records Hong Kong presenting the latest releases on his label. Learn more about Leung in a recent interview he did with Music Dish New York.
Florence & The Machine You’ve Got The Love (XX Remix)

You can’t get better than this. UK current ‘it’ band, Florence & The Machine cover Candi Staton’s wonderful disco excursion with added “X” factor – an XX remix with their trademark south of the river bass tones.
