As the host of Commerical Radio’s popular 1990s show Chi-chung’s Choice, Wong Chi-chung acted as a taste-setter for music lovers in Hong Kong. In a career that has spanned three decades, he has been a radio DJ, a TV critic, curator, promoter, singer, artist, and filmmaker. He was the first person to give Beyond air time and has been the driving force behind numerous major concerts. Now a lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University and a columnist for Time Out, he has also re-started Chi-chung’s Choice – this time as an internet show on Commerical Radio’s new Tool Bar.
Insight
Chi-chung was impressed with the many different genres on offer and the high standards across the board. While saying there’s plenty of room for Hong Kong’s indie bands to develop, he also believes their chances of making a splash are improving. “It’s the ecosystem of the music culture here that makes it hard for them to survive purely as bands. However, the growing spaces and chances for bands to perform will definitely encourage their sustainability.” Chi-chung also had kind words for the WMYA project, saying it’s a great way to promote band culture. “If Time Out can do this annually, and build it into a festival, then it’ll be even grander.” Now there’s an idea.
