Last year we named pop singer Anthony Wong Yiu-ming Hong Kong’s number one musician. For ability, style, and a willingness to go it alone creatively in an industry awash with pre-packaged ‘stars’, Wong stands out like a burning beacon of hope. As vocalist of adored 1980s duo Tat Ming Pair, and now as the founder of music production company People Mountain People Sea, which supports at17 and Pixel Toy, among others, he has cemented himself as a leading figure in Hong Kong’s music industry – and one who’s not afraid to push boundaries.
Insight
Wong has great hopes for Hong Kong’s indie scene and thinks the WMYA project can help expose people to its promise. “In Hong Kong, in the mainstream local music scene, music is not very exciting – but in the independent scene, the music is much more interesting.” He thinks our indie bands could make inroads in the music industry, but they need a helping hand: “We have an audience who like this kind of music, but we don’t have the marketing.”
