Chochukmo are ready to step up. A year ago, we named them among our top 20 music acts and since then they have only proven themselves even more worthy of our attention. On stages from The Wanch to the Fringe to JamFest and Manila’s A-Fest, the pink-shirted five-piece have shown a willingness to put themselves in front of crowds of all shapes and sizes, realising the humility required to build a reputation piece by piece while at the same time exhibiting a flair for performance that is unmatched in our indie scene.

The band are already the owners of three killer singles – Number One, Head to Toe, and Tell Her – all of which deftly mesh a dizzying array of styles, fusing rock’n’roll with dub, punk, Flamenco guitar licks, and the frantic wailings of crazed frontman Jan Curious.

And now they’ll have the chance to put those songs in front of an international audience. Our judges have decided: we’re making Chochukmo’s album.

That decision wasn’t easy. As good as Chochukmo are, they had serious competition. If you were looking for proof that our indie scene was on the up, you need look no further than the We’ll Make Your Album project for evidence. From a strong field of entries, no fewer than seven bands got nods from our judges in their respective top threes. The new wave synth rock of A Roller Control was especially popular with our judges, who heralded the band’s fresh sound and exciting dynamism. Meanwhile, long-time scenesters The Sinister Left were lauded for their beautifully arranged and ethereal art rock, and Applicants brought a burst of fresh electronic-infused indie pop to the table from lands afar.

Chochukmo, however, stood out for their energy, character, confidence, and sheer musicianship. This is a band with the talent and the attitude to become internationally known. We intend to help them make that happen. Keep an eye on Time Out in the coming weeks to follow their progress.
