We asked a group of experts to rank Hong Kong's best musicians according to talent, individuality, career achievements, promise for the future, and X factor. Then we put the results into a barrel and stirred. Here's what we came up with.
This list is just ridiculous! It seems like there isnt and standard in choosing these people. They're trying to like mix all the music genres together... what the heck? And the disney guy? What? HoCC? Hello? Look... if Anthony Wong is up there, what about those oldtimers who made triumphant comebacks this year? Lowell Lo with his spectacular EP "Suddenly..." and his musically enlightening 2050 concert at Coliseum? What about Prudence Lau?
It just looks like the editor doesn't know the local music industry that well!
I know you have the not quite the Top 20 list... but that just doesnt do it neither...
This list wouldnt be so controversial if it says Top Musicians of 2008 or something... but just top musicians per se? Doesn't make any sense. Anthony Wong has JUST released his new album like 2 weeks ago! And that puts him on the top already? And if you're talking Top Cantopop musicians of all-time, you're really talking about Sam Hui, Jacky Cheung, etc. And what about those active musicians in the scene like the mean drummer Jun Kung? Henry Chung? Hello? Where are they?
Another way to do a better job may be to select 10 musicians per music genre. Say like Top 10 Cantopop musicians, Top 10 Jazz/Blues, Top 10 Classical... and please remember to mention that it is list of this year or next year (whenever you guys decide to do this again)! If you're just saying Top 10, we're thinking about all-time... and what? And when we see people like HoCC up there... we just think that this list is ridiculous.

Either this is a “people to watch” list, or we should hang out hopes up and never read Time Out again unless we want to be confused and infuriated because obvious omissions point to that it’s not a Best of Hong Kong musicians “of all time” kind of list (unless the Music Editor is nuts). Tho there r kind of probs there too, 黃耀明 probably still has a couple more tricks up his sleeve (btw how did you guys make him look so young?) But like the Disney guy? How old are you Music Editor? Like 23? (tho that’s like still too old be lovin Mickey). Sorry I dun see him conducting the HKPO anytime soon, or like ever. Explan barrel and stir so we can see what we are looking at or we will think you are just crazy ~~ maybe this should be like the top 20 underdogs of music that would make lots sense

those who are too stupid to understand why Minggor is no.1 will never understand... let' they don't understand until forever...
Jackey Cheung, Sam Hui, no way.... so cliche.... no style, no character...

Jonathan, you are so right...
Jackie, Sam, Koo Kui Kei...all are old cliches..old cliches..
Only Ming gor could last for over twenty years with continual release of high quality album.
Yes. Those who don't understand or don't have the genes to appreciate what class, style and beauty is could never understand the work of Ming gor and why he is so significant in Canton Pop History...

the list is called :
'Time Out's top 20', it is not called 'HK Music History's Top 20', so the choice is based on personal favoritism of Time Out. It is just like: Chan Tai Man's Most Loved 20 singers, sth like that....
But, what I would like to say is Wong Yiu Ming and at17 are really full of talents and charisma and they did awesome things for HK Music Industry.
Without them, HK Music Industry would be soooo... boring

Jonathan: Actually Anthony Wong would be up on my own list too. I actually have all Anthony Wong's albums starting from his days as Tat Ming. I just want to make a point that Time Out did not specify what list this is! That's my main point... my main point is not to bash Ming Gor, but to criticize the magazine! I'd think that Ming Gor should be up on top of the list if the list is called "20 Hip HK Musicans" or "20 HK Musicians with character." About Sam Hui and Jacky Cheung... the main reason they became cliche is not because they don't have talents. It's just because they were way too popular back then. I don't want to go into debating with you whether these 2 or other artitsts have any style, character or not... this is really a matter of taste. And I can go on forever citing songs and albums supporting my own argument. One thing that no one can really deny is... these 2 people are very influential in cantopop.
Gideon: Oh please dont even mention Koo Kui Kei! He's not even that popular and/or influential! I actually agree with you that Anthony Wong is very significant in the cantopop industry, and he's in fact one of my very favorites. Again, I just want to make a point that Time Out is very unclear about what list they're selecting, and based on what standard?
Siu Ming: You do have a point there. But Time Out did not tell us clearly about that... instead it uses "top" to describe the list... that's really a word with specific meaning... it can get quite controversial!
:)

Hey all, I appreciate all the comments. Good stuff. (But I hope you don't stop reading Time Out just because you're upset with our Top 20 list, Kyle.) HK Music Lover, you seem particularly impassioned about this, which is great. But I do want to point out that in that intro up there we wrote that the musicians were evaluated according to not only talent and career achievements, but also individuality, X factor, and promise for the future. Even still, you might disagree with some of the picks on the list, but half the point of this exercise is to stimulate discussion. I might point out, also, that we consulted a number of experts from the industry to come up with this list. I've just realised that list isn't up on the website (only published in the mag), so I'll upload it now and link to it.
