Summer Disco Party
If you see someone running around Macau with bleached blond bangs, an over-the-top bejewelled leotard and no pants, it’s not the free casino drinks making you crazy: it’s Lady Gaga. Her dance-heavy, electronic pop music makes her the perfect candidate to headline the Summer Disco Party at The Venetian. What would a summertime disco celebration be without her?
The rising princess of a new kind of pop will perform songs from her multi-million-selling debut album The Fame, including hit singles like Just Dance and Poker Face, which have topped charts in Britain, the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland and the Netherlands. But though climbing charts is great, bringing pop music back from the dead is better – and that’s just what the risqué performer has done with her eclectic digital beats, urban-inspired melodies and glam persona.
Lady Gaga didn’t begin her mainstream musical career in the spotlight. She wrote songs for the likes of Britney Spears, Fergie, Akon, The Pussycat Dolls, and even New Kids on the Block. It wasn’t long until R&B star Akon noticed her performing talents and signed her to his label, Kon Live Distribution. A pop star unlike any other was born.
With her mixed bag of artistic influences, ranging from David Bowie and Grace Jones to Britney and Andy Warhol (how many people can say those names together with a straight face?), Gaga has created a unique style.
Already well-versed in performance art thanks to her earlier gigs in New York with rock DJ and go-go dancer Lady Starlight (the duo had a weekly live pop-meets-burlesque-meets-rock show called ‘Lady Gaga and the Starlight Revue’), it was when the singer began incorporating pop melodies in her work that her musical method peaked. Hers is a perfect marriage of electronic pop, vintage glam rock and an avant-garde image.
Her next goal? Using her off-the-wall performances to bring back the obsessive follower. “For me, it’s everything coming together and being a real story that will bring back the super fan,” she says. “I want to bring that back. I want the imagery to be so strong that fans will want to eat and taste and lick every part of us.”
