Best of 2010: Best Gay and Lesbian Event
Club Anthems Asia launch party
Volume, November 20
Not so much a single event as a lasting achievement, the fact that this dance compilation was released on Asia’s inaugural gay record label and was produced in our relatively conservative city is a success in its own right. And being connected to Hong Kong’s premier gay nightclub, Volume, not to mention the plethora of featured artists, has given it some serious weight. The man behind the project, Evan Steer (right), aka DJ Stonedog, has created an artistic project the city and the gay community can be truly proud of. Volume, LG/F, 83-85 Hollywood Rd, 2857 7683.
Runner-up: IDAHO
Chater Garden, May 17
Given that there was no official Gay Pride march this year, the atmosphere at the International Day Against Homophobia candle-lit vigil was impressive. The turn-out was surprisingly small, but the right message was sent out: keep up the struggle to unify the LGBT cause.
Honourable Mentions
Les Peches continue to party on with their regular club nights catering for the city’s lesbian community – but being the cool bunch they are it’s open to all. Also, plaudits must go to Scud for going it alone on his erotically charged film Amphetamine. It may have been an odd, patchy and ultimately aimless movie, but it set pulses racing and stuck two fingers up to the prudes.
