Brian Cua interview

Ahead of his set at Volume, the Manila-based DJ tells Paul Kay why he likes to spread Glee.

What’s the scene in Manila like?
The gay scene in Manila is varied – it’s not limited to just gay clubs. There are also a lot of avenues for gays to have fun (karaoke, bars, outdoor sports), and the clubbing scene is only a part of it. I also think Pinoy gays can create and have fun just about anywhere in the Metro.

Which clubs should HK boys hit if they jet down for a visit?
Well of course I have to mention the club Bed in Malate, where I am one of the resident DJs. It’s the biggest gay dance club in the Philippines. Other straight/gay clubs include Encore at the Fort, Tabu in Makati (their Tuesday models night is Hot!) and Palawan in Cubao (for the adventurous types).

What kind of tunes will you be spinning at Volume?
The kind of tunes that everyone will sing along to!

What tracks have been driving the dancefloor crazy lately?
Obviously it would be tracks from Lady Gaga, Beyoncé and Ke$ha. They are the new dancefloor divas. Also, hip-hop remixes are big with the gays... puzzling, but it shows there’s really no ‘gay’ playlist nowadays. Sometimes with the right timing, I can sneak in an old favourite or two from Whitney.

I hear you’ve been working on some tracks with our own DJ Stonedog. Tell me about that.
We were introduced via the internet by DJ Jomel Carpela, who was a resident DJ of Volume that time. Everything we did was through emails and the phone. He would send demos and I would do the initial music arrangement. After the vocals are done, I polish the arrangement/remix one more time. It’s very easy to translate what Evan wants in musical terms. He has been doing a great job consolidating all the talents in the Asian Queer circuit for the Volume album, and we really want show our community and beyond that we make original dance music too and that it can be done.

Your biog says you’re a regular remixer of Glee tunes. Are you a fan of the show?
Yes, a big fan! My DJ friend Jay Santos introduced me to the show and suggested we remix Don’t Stop Believin’. It turned out to be a huge download success [check out Dirrtyremixes.com and Gleekreport.com].

What’s your favourite musical?
Miss Saigon. I watched it twice in Drury Lane and here in the Philippines. I love the melody, the arrangement and the powerful emotion it evokes.

Sum up your attitude to life.
Live like there’s no tomorrow!

Catch Brian at Volume on Feb 20.
