Black Ransom

This brisk and dirty cop thriller by experienced cinematographer Keung Kwok-Man begins with a pair of laughably flamboyant action sequences – and that’s the spirit of the whole thing. Simon Yam plays the weary police detective, Mann, who is called into action when an old-time colleague (Sam, played by veteran TV actor Michael Miu) re-emerges as the leader of a professional crime syndicate that specialises in kidnaps and murders of wealthy triad bosses. Under Wong Jing’s tight and entertaining script, Keung manages to throw in everything from love triangles to snipers, severed fingers, cleavage close-ups, and dialogue so clanky that it’s actually rather funny. An unexpected guilty pleasure.
