Clockenflap cheat sheet: Film

Clockenflap might be primarily known for its music but its film portion is doing its utmost to catch up. Lindsay Robertson, who’s curating all the content for the Clockenflap Film Tent, is excited with this year’s much larger variety of entries from around the world, with screening times already scheduled for eight different programmes. She says, “Locally, we’ll be screening programmes from I Shot Hong Kong, IFVA, Hong Kong 48 hour Film Project and Focus on Film.”

With those, the fest has included four of Hong Kong’s most passionate advocators for grassroots filmmaking – and the diversity doesn’t end there. “We are thrilled to be collaborating with world short film label Future Shorts again and will be screening their current programme, ‘Beats From Above’,” she continues. “And we also have a wonderful programme of shorts and music videos from China, curated by Mandarin Film called ‘Bottling Chinese Spirit’.”

Apart from a small-kid-friendly programme – featuring independent shorts and music videos from Hong Kong and around the world – screening early in the day, this year’s Clockenflap also includes an environmental film block to highlight the organiser’s dedication to the cause, which will be screening Ryan Wong’s documentary The Road Ahead: The First Green Long March, about 2,000 college students’

ttempt to mobilise China towards a sustainable future. “We would like [our] audiences – whether they come in for five minutes, 15 minutes, or half an hour – to come out entertained, having seen something they would not normally get a chance to see,” says Robertson.
