Golden sands

Posted:

We’ve looked at the potential problems we face everytime we visit the beach in Hong Kong, but all is not lost. Leon Lee recommends the top spots for an indulgently lazy afternoon of sun-bathing, barbecuing, swimming and frolicking in the sand. Escape the city, and get to the beach.

1) Tai Long Sai Wan
This collection of non-gazetted beaches is one of the most beautiful in Hong Kong, and has remained flawless thanks to its remote location. Hidden on the east coast of the Sai Kung East Country Park, the four gems that make up Tai Long Sai Wan require quite a hike to reach. Those who are willing to do the legwork will be rewarded by clear blue waters and clean white sand. No phone.

2) Trio Beach
A relatively small beach located on the peninsula just off Hebe Haven, it can only be reached by sampan from the pier or a long hike from Hiram’s Highway. The pristine waters and sand attract a fair number of families on the weekends, but it rarely gets unbearably busy. Changing rooms, showers, and a BBQ area are also available, so you can freshen up after a swim and enjoy some grilled seafood. 2792 3672

3) Turtle Cove Beach
This is the smaller, quieter, and less crowded alternative to the nearby Repulse Bay Beach, and with its cliff-side entrance and 250-step walk down, it’s easy to miss. The beach itself is less than 70 metres long, but that’s plenty of space so you won’t have to fight for any towel space. The only thing missing from this perfect little getaway spot are actual turtles. Tai Tam Road, Stanley, 2813 0386.

4) Hung Shing Yeh Beach
The most popular beach on Lamma Island is easily accessible by a 20-minute walk from Yung Shue Wan Main Street. There are hardly any traces of debris to be found on the near-perfect shoreline, which features a unique view of the infamous power station to the right. With its fine, powdery sand and calm waters, it’s perfect for the little ones. A selection of cafes and restaurants at the back of the beach and a BBQ area makes for a day of eating, swimming and lounging around. The water here is also considered some of the cleanest according to the Environmental Protection Department. Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island, 2982 0352.

5) Clear Water Bay
The two beaches, Clear Water Bay First and Second, stay true to their names and offer just that to both locals and visitors. The Second Beach tends to be more crowded while the First has slightly better water quality. Nearby is the Clear Water Country Park which has a trail that leads to the Second. First: Tai Wan Tau, Clear Water Bay Road, 2719 8308; Second: Tai Au Mun Road, Clear Water Bay, 2719 0351.
