Best bars for beer in Hong Kong
The Globe
Its new and bigger location is a stunning upgrade for a bar that was already pretty awesome. Nine beers on tap – including Hong Kong’s own Typhoon 8 real ale – and plenty of international bottled beers. Basement, Garley Bldg, 45-53 Graham St, Central, 2543 1941.
Inn Side Out
Imported beers from the US, Belgium, Australia and England head the beer list alongside the locally brewed Too Soo Brew and Aldrich Bay Pale Ale at this often-packed indoor-outdoor establishment. Its sister bars Hong Kong Brew House (Central) and East End Brewery (Quarry Bay) also get two thumbs up. Sunning Plaza, 10 Hysan Ave, Causeway Bay, 2895 2900.
The Pawn
While it’s known mainly as a high-end gastropub, The Pawn also has a focus on fine beers. We expect that focus to become even sharper after the bar hosts a planned two-week British beer festival in October. 62 Johnston Rd, Wan Chai, 2866 3444.
Beer Bay (Discovery Bay)
Serving English tap beers such as Doom Bar Bitter and a variety of imported ales at good prices has made the Beer Bay a steadfast local favourite. Shop 105A, Discovery Bay Plaza, Discovery Bay.
King Ludwig’s
The best thing of Deutschland in our fair city: namely, draught beers served in one-litre steins. You can down them in the Wan Chai or Tsim Sha Tsui locations, but we recommend heading to Stanley for sea views from the historic Murray House. Shop 202, Murray House, Stanley Plaza, Stanley, 2899 0122.
Trafalgar
This British pub has authentic English ales, such as Spitfire on tap, and loads of others in bottles. It’s a unique spot to catch a televised sports match, because it’s projected onto a screen on the outdoor terrace. 5/F, 54-62 Lockhart Rd, The Broadway, Wan Chai, 2110 1513.
The Canny Man
The real deal in Scottish drinking. Plenty of English and Scottish ales (including Caledonian) and haggis. Kilts and sporrons optional. A fine array of Belgian beers on offer, too. Basement, Wharney Guang Dong Hotel, 57-73 Lockhart Rd, Wan Chai.
The Keg
Designed to look like the inside of a barrel, you can sample beers from around the world (Tankhouse Ale, Monteiths, Great Dane to name a few) while watching some hard-hitting hockey at this Canada-themed bar. 52 D’Aguilar St, Central, 2810 0369.
Lan Kwai Fong Beer Bar
Smack bang in the middle of the Lan Kwai Fong action, this spacious venue is great for people-watching and enjoying a brew from the laundry list of more than 100 international and local beers. G/F, California Tower, 30-32 D’Aguilar St, 2521 1345.

Don't forget the Beer Bay also has locations in the Central ferry piers -- pier 3 (Discovery Bay) and pier 4 (Lamma)! They also serve Doombar on tap and have a large selection of good English ales.
One more thing: a price guide would have been greatly appreciated. I love good beer but I'm not rich enough to pay $75 for a pint every time I go out. Some places (Beer Bay, Inn Side Out) offer the same great beers for $20 or $30 less than other places (The Globe, Canny Man, The Pawn).
Cochrane's is hands down the best pub for beer. It has more selection that all the pubs mentioned combined. Next to the escalator.
The Trafalgar's draught beer is truly dreadful, undrinkably vile, and the Canny Man is ludicrously over-priced.
