Hong Kong's fashion royalty: Hilary Tsui

Posted:

Best friends with fellow style icons Wyman Wong (lyricist, columnist and occasional runway star) and Titi Kwan (best known as Faye Wong’s stylist), Tsui first became famous for being Mrs Eason Chan. Her experimental style, combining High Street with high fashion, has made her a favourite among paparazzi. Check out her style at her boutique, LIGER, in Causeway Bay. What characterises Hong Kong style?

It’s a very mixed style and culture, although Japan is a heavy influence.

What inspiration do you draw from Hong Kong?
My inspiration doesn’t only come from Hong Kong. Every moment when I open my eyes and go about my day, people I meet, magazines I read – all stimulate my inspiration. Lately I’ve been inspired by a lot of blogs.

Hong Kong’s fashion scene: maligned or over-hyped?
I don’t think Hong Kong is over-hyped, but it does like to follow the hype, and follow a lot of different trends from different territories.

If you could fix one thing about the way Hongkongers dress, what would it be?
I don’t think I am qualified to fix anything about how Hongkongers dress, but I do want to say, be yourself and wear what you think is comfortable.

Why are Hong Kong designers important?
I very much support local designers; I like to go check out a lot of local designers and my friend Johanna Ho, and Izzue. Hong Kong designers influence the way China perceives fashion and therefore they’re very important.

Why do you think people respond to your sense of style?
I’m not sure, but I’d like to think that I am a bit adventurous and creative. I also like mixing not only colours but also different textures and materials to create my personal style.
