Best of 2009: Best Club
Best Hong Kong Film: Volar
In the past 12 months, Volar has been responsible for importing the likes of LA Riots, A-Trak, The Bloody Beetroots, CSS’s Lovefoxxx and half of Digitalism. They’ve also nurtured new night Hype Nasty, as well as hosting top-notch locally produced dance nights throughout the week. Ignoring their beer-guzzling, jukebox-playing neighbours on D’Aguilar Street, Volar has been a consistent source of quality, and for that we salute them. Basement, 38-44 D’Aguliar St, Central, 2810 1272.
Honourable mention: Play
Since it transformed from Q97, Play has successfully established itself as the new hangout for the coming-of-age champagne kids. It’s difficult to start clubs in the crowded Central market, but since launching with an appearance from the one and only Craig David, Play has managed to hold its own with reliable DJs, a strategically placed pole and a crazily up for it crowd. Basement, 32 D’Aguilar St, Central, 2868 6062.

Volar
Well, would you look at that – you agreed that for the best dance nights and their roster of international music, it’s impossible to go past Volar. Can anyone challenge these guys?
