Best Hong Kong Film: Accident

Maverick director Soi Cheang channels Jean-Pierre Melville in this quietly exhilarating thriller, which blends meticulously staged crimes with Zen-like meditations on fate and coincidence. Prolific actor Louis Koo gives his best performance of the year (among his 475 film projects…) as a paranoid assassin who is hopelessly trapped in a downward spiral of psychological violence.

In a year that saw superheroes turn psycho, horror gorefests go 3D (before porn!), and the world ending in the most visually striking manner mankind has ever witnessed, Pixar’s hilarious and heart-warming follow-up to last year’s magnificent WALL·E provided us with the much-needed affirmation that life, despite all those things from the first line, still has room for a bittersweet triumph.

Readers' Choice: Best Film

Up

Pixar showed us the power of a good story coupled with breathtaking animation, and they almost made us cry over an imaginary bird in the process. Well done, Pixar – we all agree you got us.
