Best of 2009: Best On Stage
Titus Andronicus 2.0 City Hall, June 19-21
Seven actors, seven chairs, one pitch-black theatre space. By seamlessly applying his minimalist aesthetic and physical approach to Shakespeare’s gallery of lust, murder, and grisly dismemberment, director Tang Shu-wing’s created an operatic distillation of the bloodthirsty Titus right down to its most primal and hysterical essence. A hypnotically powerful experience unto itself.
Honourable mention: Adolf Art Centre, April 29-May 2
With a swastika emblazoned on a Nazi banner at the back of the stage, Pip Utton gave an absolutely terrifying portrayal of the Führer – his speech spellbinding, his mannerisms impossibly convincing – in this fringe theatre work during April’s Microfest, humanising history’s vilest man to the point where the devastated viewers were forced to recognise his manipulative genius.
