Best of 2009: Best Exhibition
Louis Vuitton: A Passion for Creation Museum of Modern Art, May 22-August 9
While it would be easy to complain about the commercial implications of naming Louis Vuitton’s exhibition as the best of 2009, the fact remains that, brand or no brand, the exhibition amassed a world-class presentation of contemporary art – bringing together works by Gilbert & George, Andreas Gursky, Bertrand Lavier, Christian Marclay, Takashi Murakami and Richard Prince, among others – that remains unequalled in Hong Kong this year.
Honourable mention: A Blow to the Everyday Osage Kwun Tong, October 13-November 19
Proving the importance of careful curation, West Kowloon Cultural District board member Yuko Hasegawa presented a collection of up-and-coming contemporary artists from her native Japan that successfully reflected the urban ethos of Hong Kong in her clever manipulation of the space at Osage Kwun Tong.
