The Bloody Beetroots Volar, July 24
When the Italian masked duo stormed Volar in July, there was at least one epic fail of a crowd surf that had the paramedics come running, along with a bona fide epileptic fit, and a bloody brawl at closing time. The Beetroots’ music was intense electro, anarchic, and the rare kind of sound that makes you do things you wouldn’t believe.
Honourable mention: Diplo + Steve Aoki dragon-i, September 26
If anything was going to bring out the demons in the champagne-guzzling 20-somethings that frequent dragon-i, it was a visit from the high priest of party rockerdom Steve Aoki, and dynamite DJ Diplo. Grimey, crud-filled, and sweaty, this packed night was the year’s most surprising club scene.
