Best of 2009: Best Gig
British Sea Power Grappa’s Cellar, October 10
Rarely does a gig in Hong Kong erupt into complete and utter madness. But when these Brighton indie-rockers came to Grappa’s Cellar, the ceiling fans were spinning, the pit was moshing, and general mayhem ensued. Finishing by jamming on a repeated chord, BSP guitarist and famed stage diver Martin Noble launched himself into the crowd, before several others followed suit. Oh, and it sounded good, too.
Honourable mention: Underworld AsiaWorld-Arena, September 30
Any doubts over whether the dance veterans could still cut it live were obliterated by this searing performance. Mesmerising visuals, thumping techno beats and Karl Hyde’s high-energy exertions made this an unforgettable night – even before a giant balloon-shower-enhanced rendition of Born Slippy.
Reader's Choice: Coldplay
While they might not top our playlist, we have to acknowledge that Coldplay were the year’s biggest music act to visit Hong Kong, and their high-production show at AsiaWorld-Arena was outstanding. To this, dear readers, we say ‘fair enough’.
