Clockenflap cheat sheet: Art
Clockenflap’s art component is all themed on the word and, more abstractly, the idea that is Clockenflap. But what is ‘Clockenflap’? Artists showing at the festival have various ideas, from a huge flap and broken circuits to mermaids in bubbles and a huge bunny.
“We want artists that are able to work within the framework of Clockenflap and not take themselves too seriously,” says Jay Forster, one of the main brains behind the festival.
Some local names will grace the festival’s art portion with graffiti collective ST/ART painting live on an 8x40 foot wall over the two days. Illustration cult duo Graphic/Airlines will be showing a 15 foot rabbit sculpture and street artist Start from Zero’s fist sculpture will be on show. On the media end of the spectrum, Catherine Tai will be showing a new media piece that involves laborious circuit bending.
Clockenflap will also have some international art, with Australian artist Hanna Hoyne bringing four of her mermaid-looking mobile suit installations. And for those looking for a shot of themselves, Clockenflap commercial art star Adrian Wong will be your family photographer in an interactive photo booth piece.
“We lean towards new media,” admits Forster. “We wanted artists who would interpret the theme. It’s mainly graphic design, illustration, and interactivity to make things livelier.”
