12th Planet
You probably haven’t heard of John Dadzie before but you might recognise this dude’s DJ moniker, 12th Planet. Born and raised in LA, Dadzie was formerly known as Infiltrata, where his focus was on drum ‘n’ bass tunes. And good at it he was too. But, around 2005, he took his music to the next level, adopted the new world of dubstep and became 12th Planet. And now he really is out of this world. He’s become a music producer with a style praised by many in the biz and has even been cited on occasion as ‘America’s king of dubstep’.
It’s been a busy year for 12th Planet. He’s been spending most of his time on the road promoting his EP The End is Near, which has a concept deriving from the Mayan-born urban legend of 2012 being the year of the apocalypse. And it seems, if the sounds from The End are anything to go by, the end of the world really may be accompanied by some pretty nasty melodies and wobbly basslines. Also appearing on the album are fellow US dubstep artists Kill The Noise and Skream as well as brostep hit-maker Skrillex. And they’re just a sampling of the DJs that 12th Planet regularly collaborates with – proof of the symbiotic growth of the US dubstep scene.
The increasingly popular genre is taking 12th Planet to some pretty far flung places as he continues to tour the globe. He’s in Asia for the first time, though, stopping in Hong Kong at Fly. So even if the apocalypse is coming, we wouldn’t mind hitting the floor listening to his beats. That wouldn’t be a bad way to go out at all.
