Benji Boko
This afro-headed big kid from Brighton, UK, has made quite a splash in the electro scene lately. Spinning at festivals like Glastonbury and Bestival (two of his personal favourite gigs), being featured on Nightmares On Wax Presents: Wax On Records and debuting his own sounds in his album Beats, Treats & All Things Unique, has certainly kept the eclectic DJ/producer busy. Both endeavours are separate as he doesn’t spin any of his own tracks in his sets.
The Tru Thoughts label artist attributes his downtempo, hip-hop infused sound to influences like Fatboy Slim, Coldcut, DJ Yoda, Michael Jackson, Prince and early Ninjatune compilations. “And oh yeah, Dr. Dre’s 2001. That shit made me start producing for real!” adds Boko, excitedly. While his solo work is slowly starting to gain critical notice, with soulfully enchanting tracks like Where My Heart Is featuring UK rapper Maxi Jazz and Charuuna, he continues to focus on his global touring.
Highly energetic when spinning in both intimate club settings and crowds of thousands, Boko in DJ mode is just as thrilling to see as his mixes are to hear. He never stops bouncing and moving and feels it’s his job to create the atmosphere. “I do better shows when the crowds are lively and up for a party,” he admits. And as for his first ever show in Hong Kong? “I’m ready to cause some serious mayhem on the dance floor.” Believe.
